BMI tells you whether your weight is healthy for your height. A raised BMI is one of the strongest risk factors for type 2 diabetes — know your number in seconds.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening number that compares your weight to your height. It gives doctors a quick, reliable indication of whether you are underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight or obese — without any lab test.
BMI is calculated with a single formula:
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m)]2
For example, a person weighing 70 kg with a height of 1.70 m has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 24.2. Against the Asian-Indian cut-offs that falls in the overweight band, even though the same number would be called “normal” on the global WHO scale.
The same formula is used for children and teenagers, but the result is plotted on age-and-gender specific percentile charts rather than read against the adult bands below.
India follows stricter BMI cut-offs than the rest of the world. The table below shows both, so you can see exactly where you stand.
| Category | Asian-Indian BMI (ICMR / WHO Asia-Pacific) | Global BMI (WHO) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underweight | Below 18.5 | Below 18.5 | Possible nutritional deficiency, low muscle mass or an underlying illness. |
| Normal / Healthy | 18.5 – 22.9 | 18.5 – 24.9 | Lowest risk band. Maintain with balanced diet and regular activity. |
| Overweight | 23.0 – 24.9 | 25.0 – 29.9 | Increased risk of pre-diabetes, high BP and cholesterol. Time to act. |
| Obese | 25.0 and above | 30.0 and above | High risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Medical guidance advised. |
Kins Diabetes uses the Asian-Indian cut-offs in this calculator, in line with ICMR guidance for the Indian population.
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It measures total body weight, not body composition, so it has real limitations:
That is why our doctors read your BMI alongside your waist circumference, blood sugar, HbA1c and lipid profile before advising treatment.
